Kelp Fest 2026
What an incredible time we had at Kelp Fest 2026! This year’s event was an absolute success, serving as a powerful testament to the massive momentum building behind Atlantic Canada's sustainable kelp industry. From inspiring panel discussions on regenerative ocean cultivation to showcasing the latest breakthroughs in the industry, the energy on the floor was nothing short of electric.
Beyond the exciting industry growth, the true highlight of Kelp Fest was the profound sense of community. It was a massive honor to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with so many visionary, like-minded businesses and organizations who share our deep commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. Being surrounded by passionate harvesters, researchers, and entrepreneurs who are all working toward a thriving, climate-resilient future was incredibly validating—and it proves that when we collaborate to protect and celebrate our maritime coast, the possibilities are endless. We are already looking forward to next year!
Roadmap to Seaweed Farming
According to the strategic market assessment conducted by Changing Tastes of the Ecology Action Centre (Click Here to read full article), Nova Scotia is sitting on a golden ecological opportunity. The province is uniquely positioned to capture a major share of the exploding $200 million North American regional market for kelp and kelp-based ingredients.
By leaning into our established infrastructure, geographical advantages, and decades of local expertise, Nova Scotia’s emerging seaweed sector is projected to produce upwards of $38 million in farmed kelp and ingredients over the coming years.
This isn't just an opportunity for seaweed farmers; it's also a win for the environment due to kelp cultivation being inherently climate-resilient, requiring zero freshwater, artificial fertilizers, or pesticides. Forward-thinking businesses outside the maritime sector are beginning to realize that integrating kelp extract into their existing supply chains is an excellent way to elevate their products. The unique biological compatibility of kelp means its raw nutrients can be transformed into high-value ingredients across multiple commercial sectors.

We are also absolutely thrilled to shine a bright spotlight on our incredible, ongoing relationship with Eastern College. Eastern College has recently hired a dedicated Community Development professional whose primary focus will be to build stronger, grassroots connections with local businesses, neighborhoods, and community members all along our maritime provinces. This specialized role is entirely focused on breaking down communication barriers and fostering a spirit of true regional collaboration.
By uniting our communities at the foundational level, this new role will lay the vital groundwork that naturally assists Scotia Kelp's overarching goals of community collaboration and local support. More importantly, this advocate will serve as a rising tide that lifts all boats, providing strategic support and networking opportunities to countless other small businesses and organizations across the province.
